Jane started The Shed in her backyard during the pandemic. Joined by her co-owner Phebe, they grew it into a leading brick-and-mortar Pilates studio in Richmond, Virginia in March 2025, without losing their close-knit, community feel. Half of their members followed Jane from the backyard.
Early on, Jane and Phebe knew they needed a stronger, more scalable studio management platform to support their growth.
After switching to bsport, their revenue increased by 220% in just six months.
The Shed now offers reformer and mat Pilates classes, along with an on-demand library of over 200 videos. Even as the studio has grown, the experience hasn’t changed. It remains a local boutique studio where members feel known, heard, and connected.
Before bsport, Jane was using Acuity for scheduling and booking. It worked well enough early on, but the studio eventually outgrew it. The features weren't there to support where The Shed was heading, and reporting was a constant limitation.
Jane put it plainly: "The biggest difference when moving from Acuity to bsport is that the platform is more client-facing and client-controlled."
Jane and Phebe easily manage a high-volume of small-group reformer classes and waitlists from wherever they are. Making schedule adjustments, managing recurring classes, and seeing class occupancy is all possible at a glance.
“I really like the scheduling and reporting in bsport. They’re really easy to use. The overall dashboard is great, and I’ve been really happy with it. Jane and I use bsport a lot on our phones, as we’re not in front of a computer very often, and it’s been really easy to manage from there.”
— Phebe Jenkins, co-owner, The Shed
For busy studio owners, managing tasks like class edits, attendance, and tracking sales from their phone makes things that much easier.
The Shed’s library of online classes offer flexibility and financial benefit to members which may not be able to attend every day in-person at the studio.
“Some members follow a hybrid workout model. They want in-person classes as well as online classes. We treat it as a supplement to coming into the studio.”
— Jane Ellington, founder, The Shed
The demand for online classes offers an additional revenue stream for The Shed.
After launching a custom branded app, The Shed could keep its brand intact while making booking easier, something that mattered more once they moved into a bigger space.
"bsport was really well received. People having it in the front of their hand on their phone, it limited a lot of extra communication. It takes you out of the equation."
The team actively points members toward the app through their website, emails, and social media to facilitate retention.
“It creates a level of commitment. Having your credit card saved in the app means it’s just one click to buy another credit. It’s super simple and efficient.”
Since moving from a general-purpose tool to a platform built for boutique studios, Jane and Phebe have been able to focus more on their members and let bsport handle more of the operational side.
Revenue now comes in without the owners having to initiate it manually. Before making the switch, Jane put it bluntly: “I was only making money if I was initiating it.” Now, clear dashboards give them an easy read on the business, while stronger tools help keep revenue flowing, something their previous platform could not support as effectively.
When the time came to expand from a backyard setup to a fully booked studio, bsport was the platform they chose to grow with, without sacrificing instructor quality or the sense of community The Shed is known for.
